BUSINESSES/SERVICES GENERAL:
Butte Valley has an area of approximately 80,000 acres. The local economy is dominated by agricultural activity. Local growers produce a variety of hay and grain crops suitable for cattle, dairy and horse markets. In addition, small and large businesses alike focus on significant strawberry plant production in the Valley. These farming activities are complemented with family and corporate livestock (primarily cattle) ranches.The small communities of Tenant, Mt. Hebron, Macdoel and the City of Dorris (pop. of approx 860) host a variety of retail and public service components (see Business Directory). Other major employers include two wood mills, federal, state and local government agencies.
The Butte Valley community is supported by several different denominational churches, several highly rated volunteer Fire Departments, a health clinic located in the City of Dorris and a proven Ambulance Service. Public safety is provide by the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department, California Fish and Game , Federal Forest Service-Officers and the California CHP.
The primary transportation corridors for Butte Valley are state Hwy 97 and 160. Butte Valley Airport features a 4300 ft paved runway, with VFR control and no ground services.
